I grew up in Southern California where our family got to waterski and kneeboard a few times a year. We were out in the boat getting ready to ride our new retractable-fin kneeboard in the Carlsbad Lagoon when I saw some guy (who I think was Tony Finn) ride by us on a Skurfer. It was 1987 and I was 11 years old. I said, “Dad, I want one of those kneeboards you stand up on!” He quickly replied, “Read my lips, son…you’re NEVER gonna get one of those!” He and I will always remember that moment like it was yesterday because his first name (and my middle name), Belmont, has been branded on one of the best-selling wakeboards in history.
Who would have thought?
